In 1996, Tom Walter of Wake Forest became head coach at George Washington University. Over eight seasons, he compiled a 273–181 record, becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach. In 2002, the team earned an NCAA tournament appearance, and he was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. Under his leadership, 26 players signed professional contracts, including one who went on to reach Major League Baseball.
